My Tribute To Studio
I've been pretty much feeling as if I'm in a shit hole lately, but a mass email from an old lecturer from school got me laughing to tears. She mentioned clearing up the old office, and found some of our old TV studio projects we did back then. She was asking if any of us would want to keep them for fun.
I read through the list of titles she attached, and my mind stirred itself to all those days in that freezing studio with all of us learning how to pitch, designing our own sets, trying to fix the lights and sound, and well, basically trying to get everyone into the same rhythm(which usually never quite happen). But the fact remains that at the end of the day, every production looks tacky(but very, very fun)
I read through our titles like "Sing and Win", "Shiok Awards", "Mr. Hunk", "Tabloid Trash", and I thought, -how typical of all of us to come up with shows like that. Here were a few moments that still got me smiling.
- Z. Shah was the talent for one show. He was lip-syching to Westlife's 'If I Let You Go'. He had this constant dance move with his hands which someone curtly called 'stretch-your-hands-and-catch-that-butterflies' move.
- Nina C. was a talent lip-synching to 'Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps' for a talentime show. She was dressed in some furry black top (which she admit was pretty cool in secondary school), and she did a pretty good job performing. Funny thing was 2 other idiots were pulled in to pretend they were contestants, too, -just to stand at the 'awards' ceremony at the end, clapping at Nina the winner obviously cos she was the only one who sang.
- The show when the quiet and talented Brian Hong performed live with his violin. We girls begged him to play the magical piece from 'Cinema Paradiso', and after a few rehearsals, he got all the girls (me included) melting at the performance. While he was in the studio, Audrey, Teng L, and me were at the control panel waiting around, giggling silly gossiping about our performer. Audrey went, "Hey, let's not call Brian by the name, he might know. Let's call him.... Bob!" *more giggles*. And then..horror horror, we realised the microphone there which was connected to his earpiece wasn't turned off, so Audrey quietly asked him..."Er..Brian...were you listening to what we're saying?" And we heard him loud and clear, "Er...yes...I'm supposed to be Bob, right?"
- We had the indie band 'Moods' playing for us for a show, so during the technical prep period, Teng L.,Audrey, Yati and me had to be stand ins for them. Quite honestly, we were the last people anyone can choose to stand in for any sort of band. Teng L. was on drums, Yati on base, Audrey on lead, and I was suppose to be the vocals. They were playing Radiohead's 'High n Dry' over the speakers, and the only sound all of us could make was during the chorus was -
"Don't leave me high..." and each of us, one after another will go, "high, high, high, high"
"Don't leave me dry..." - "dry,dry,dry,dry"
Even better, an ode to Audrey's bright idea, she came up with a dance sequence for all of us as well...Oh God, -that must have been quite a sight.
- During our very first time in the studio in first year. One of our first lesson was to take turns during practical to do camera, sound, vision mixing, performing, directing, and audio mixing. We had a stupid potted plant as a background, and being the performer was easy, -you just had to hold the microphone and lip-sync to that unbearable Michael W. Smith's song, "Friends". The only funny thing was all the girls looked really weird onscreen, performing with a man's voice.
